The Gardens at Maydene

When we moved to Maydene in 1978 the land around the house was uncultivated except for one or two beds and a few apple trees. During the passing years the landscape has been completely altered with the addition of three ponds, an orchard, lawns, mixed borders, terraces, summer houses, two greenhouses and a vegetable patch. We had two Labrador Retrievers, one black and one yellow, at that time.

In 1984 the first Field Spaniel arrived followed very soon by several others.

The garden had to be altered to allow for digging and stick carrying activities. Fences were erected to keep the Fields in and to protect the wild life on the pond. Birds have thrived, including the common species, woodpeckers, wrens, bluetits, goldfinches and a family of moorhens live on the pond. Ducks and geese call in for a rest but are soon chased away by the moorhens. The Barn Owl visits on occasions and bats, frogs, toads, dragonflies and butterflies are seen in the summer. Snakes have been spotted in the orchard and moles and voles keep the dogs busy.
