Lulu came from Yana Kodicek’s kennel near Cambridge. The most famous dog bred by Yana was Wyncek Ultra who went to Howard and Sheila’s Taylor’s Tayowen Kennel and played an important part in their breeding programme. Lulu was a pretty bitch, perhaps on the small side for those days—she had a sweet character and lovely temperament. She had two litters one by Sh.Ch. Maydene Max and the other by Rhiwlas Nautical Lad.
Muffin was never shown because she had weak pasterns. The problem did not affect her lifestyle and she could hold her own in races to the top of the garden. She was a firm favourite at Maydene because of her beautiful head and long ears. She had one litter by Rhiwlas Wateroak Survivor. Two of her puppies remained at Maydene. They were M. Moonbeam and M..Moonsprite. ![]() ![]() (Lotus) 1997– 2009 Rhiwlas Hafren x Ridgetor Ice Diamond of Rhiwlas Lotus came from Pam and Clive Rowland’s Rhiwlas Kennel in Wales. She taught the Maydene dogs to sing. It is said that musical talent is inherited and, certainly it is here, where you can often hear a chorus of Fields. She was a dear, loyal companion who never had a cross word. She had two small litters—one by Maydene Morse (both liver) and one by Sh.Ch Nadavin Inheritance (both liver/roan). Maydene Martha was the sole survivor. Molly lives happily up at the house. She has never been shown because of her shyness. Efforts were made to socialise her without success. Her favourite place is under the kitchen table or on the dog sofa if she can get up there before the others. She is extremely pretty with long ears and dark eyes—very much like her mother.
Marty was the sole survivor in her litter of two.
She had to be bottle fed and played with before and after feeds.
Consequently she became people orientated. She is
Matt is the top dog in the kennel. In the show ring he has gained one Challenge Certificate and two Reserve Challenge Certificates. He prefers to be in an outdoor ring on the grass and sulks if he is forced to be in a claustrophobic tent or in a noisy indoor venue. At home he is guard dog supreme and patrols the boundaries of Maydene. His enemy is the Golden Retriever who lives opposite and stares at him through the gate. He also barks at the girls on their horses when they ride along the bridle path adjoining our patch.
Mary, sister to Matt, spent her early years trying to escape from the garden. Her showing career was delayed because of a lack of coat. In 2009 she was mated to Havelli Showtime and produced five healthy puppies with lovely dark liver coats. She returned to the ring to win several Limit Bitch classes. At seven years of age she can still jump and climb over a four foot gate. The grass is always greener on the other side for Mary.
Opal was bred by Paula Smith out of a Maydene bitch. She is quite beautiful but, sadly has not been shown because of a dentition fault. This does not affect her eating or carrying her toys. She lives happily with her cousins, niece and nephews and extended family. Her best friend is Mungo.
This is my last litter, that is why I kept three! Maydene Masey went to my granddaughter, Julia Goodwin. My three have won several Best Puppy awards and even Best of Breed at Open shows.
THE FUTURE It is difficult for me to give up something that I enjoy and when it is breeding dogs it is necessary to be very strict. During my time in Fields (from 1984) I have only bred a litter when I wanted a new baby to show. There were sad occasions when I lost puppies for no visible reason, but most of the time I enjoyed every minute of the experience. The impetus to attend shows lessens when there are no more litters in the pipeline. Probably living on the Isle of Wight and the necessity to rise at three to catch a four in the morning ferry may add to the lack of enthusiasm! JUST ENJOY MY DOGS AND SEE YOU SOMETIMES AT SHOWS Searching for mice in the woodpile Squelching and playing in the mud |
